An unusual find on Flag Day

June 14th was Flag Day. I hope you all flew the colors that day and everyday as a matter of fact! As usual the Legion held its yearly Flag Ceremony where old, worn and tattered flags are destroyed the proper way, by fire. We had Brentwood Cub Pack, 2 Boy Scouts, and several leaders including Cliff Cray, who is also a member of the Legion.

The Ceremony was officiated by the Commander, Eric Gregg, Chaplain Seraphine Silva, and SGT.-at-Arms Don Reynolds, Junior Vice Commander Ted Jackson, Executive and house Committee members Ken Maynard and Charlie Brown.

An unusual find on Flag Day Cont.

An interesting thing happened while performing the ceremony. One of the flags, which was neatly folded, seemed to have a dark blue star field. It stood out among the others that were faded and tired. I stopped the scout from putting the flag in the brazier and had him help me unfold it. As I did, Charlie Brown noticed that the flag looked like it had 48 stars. Indeed, counting the columns and rows, 8x8, the flag had 48 stars. In addition the flag was in good condition showing only a stain or two, possibly from water.

We carefully refolded the flag and I brought it home and laundered it. After washing it I hung the flag from the banister over the stairs and let the flag dry. It had come clean. The Stripes, stains removed, where a clean white, the red, deep and bold. The Blue Star field and white Stars stood out proudly.

Unusual find on Flag Day

As a matter of history, Hawaii and Alaska were added to the union in 1959. That made this flag at least 50 years old.  I wondered where this flag had been and what it had seen. I perhaps will never know. The flag was in one of two barrels filled with flags that have long since passed there serviceable days.

Now, this is the question. What shall we do with this flag? It certainly will not be discarded, or put away to be forgotten in a box or envelope. I certainly do not know how many of its type exists anymore. I am certain that some are still around, tucked away as mementos or perhaps in display cases in honor of veterans long since passed.  This one came to us, was found, for a reason I think. So drop me a line, let me know what you think we should do with this flag.
